I am a Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I use qualitative, interpretive research to study the ethical and social consequences of artificial intelligence (AI) in the context of work and organizations. In more recent projects, my research has examined the transformation of knowledge work through the integration of AI. I draw on the concept of 'human-AI symbiosis' to explain how humans and AI systems can work together synergistically, complementing each other in decision-making within organizational contexts. My research has also advanced the concept of algorithmic management, detailing how algorithms can automate or augment managerial functions. In previous projects, I explored flexible organizational contexts, such as the gig economy, specifically investigating the paradoxical roles of digital labor platforms in organizing and mediating work practices.
